Nobody is above criticism, no matter how high their ivory tower sits. And criticism can be nuanced instead of a heavy handed public lashing. Earlier this week, The Carters ( Beyoncé & Shawn) starred in a Tiffany & Co. advertisement. Jay and Bey are pictured in front of a never before seen Jean-Michel Basqiaut painting. Beyonce, stunning, wore the priceless Tiffany diamond over 300 years old. Jay posed in his usual Basquiat cosplay. This ad is minuscule in the grand scheme but with context, this is ad another notch in a gaudy and overpriced belt.
The Carters’ public image is manicured more than most. When you’re as powerful as the Carters, you don’t have to answer difficult questions. Beyonce wore a priceless diamond in a Tiffany’s Ad a year after releasing Black is King, a visual album that celebrated African culture. Roughly half of the diamonds mined are from Africa. No one asked where that diamond around her neck was discovered? She’s the first black woman to ever wear the diamond. Beyoncé’s fans celebrate her wins as if they are their own but this isn’t the case. Beyonce’s career accomplishments belong solely to her, along with any wealth she has amassed.
